Have you read much Banks? I thought Excession was one of his weakest novels (with the M. and without).
Excession is the last ‘Culture’ novel of Banks that I hadn’t read. So far, it doesn’t seem too bad, but I’m only about a third of the way through.
I have found a big descrepancy in reviews of his works; probably a matter of taste. For example, many people loved Consider Phlebas, but it didn’t really appeal to me (I’m planning to revisit it some day to see if I missed something the first time). I’ll let you know what I think of Excession after I’m finished.
I’ve only read one of banks’ mainstream novels so far (The Wasp Factory), and I thought the big ‘reveal’ in the book was over-telegraphed and, although I thought the book had some merit, I didn’t really enjoy it. I’m planning on reading ‘The Bridge’ soon.
For the most part, I enjoy Iain Banks’s writing style.
